Written Italy’s delegation head, Gigi Buffon, asserts that the Azzurri are being undervalued at Euro 2024 and believes they can count on a minimum of four exceptional players.
Buffon, accompanied by Napoli skipper Giovanni Di Lorenzo, addressed the media at Casa Azzurri on Wednesday.
The Italian squad arrived in Germany on Monday night and conducted a training session in front of nearly 5,000 spectators yesterday.
This marks Buffon’s inaugural major international tournament as Italy’s delegation head, prompting inquiries about his sentiments and outlook before Italy’s inaugural match against Albania on Saturday.
“I was curious about my feelings and how I would prepare in a different role,” remarked Buffon, as cited by TMW.
“I can say that what I feel is exactly the same. The levels of adrenaline and attention have increased compared to the first few days. I want to give my little contribution and we all hope to do nice things.”
Buffon emphasized, “I think this team is probably underestimated.”
“It’s very competitive and the human level of these lads is impressive. I like this the most: this sense of belonging and a great attitude. There is humility and hard work. In addition, there are four, five or six top players so we have the right people for a good competition.”
Buffon indicated he wouldn’t revisit Duisburg, the training base for Italy during their successful 2006 World Cup campaign under Marcello Lippi’s management.
During the same press briefing, Buffon commended Gigio Donnarumma, Guglielmo Vicario, and Alex Meret, expressing confidence in Italy’s wealth of talented goalkeepers for the foreseeable future.
Italy will kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Albania on Saturday, June 15. The second group stage encounter is scheduled against Spain on June 20, with the final group match against Croatia on Monday, June 24.
